Open Position: Road Maintenance Worker/Truck Driver
Overview:

Under the general direction of the Road Foreman, performs road construction, road maintenance, and related operational duties to support the safe and efficient maintenance of County roads and infrastructure. This position performs field work in varying weather and environmental conditions and exercises independent judgment in completing assignments. Responsibilities may include road maintenance, equipment operation, snow removal, material handling, documentation, and reporting road-related deficiencies.
ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities:

- Perform road construction and maintenance activities as assigned by the Road Foreman.
- Conduct snow removal operations to maintain safe roadway conditions during winter weather events.
- Perform surface maintenance activities to preserve roadway integrity and safety.
- Maintain road shoulders through grading, repair, and stabilization efforts.
- Trim and maintain trees and shrubs to improve roadway visibility and safety.
- Assist with drainage maintenance, including ditching, culvert inspection, and water flow management.
- Apply brining materials and assist in roadway treatment operations.
- Perform blading and grading activities to maintain road surfaces.
- Accurately document daily labor, equipment usage, inventory, and material consumption.
- Inspect and report roadway defects, hazards, and traffic sign deficiencies.
- Maintain assigned County Road Commission equipment, vehicles, and property in a clean and serviceable condition.
- Safely operate equipment and vehicles necessary to complete road maintenance assignments.
- Work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and emergency operations when necessary, including severe weather response.
- Exercise independent judgment in completing assigned duties and responsibilities effectively.
- Perform all other duties necessary to support the smooth and efficient operation of the County Road Commission.

Essential Job Elements and Physical Requirements:
- The Road Maintenance Worker/Truck Driver position is routinely performed in field environments and requires frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions, uneven terrain, traffic hazards, dust, noise, and physically demanding tasks. Employees may be required to perform strenuous labor, operate heavy equipment, lift materials, and work extended shifts as operational needs require.
Qualifications:
- Ability to deal with the public, coworkers, and contractors effectively and courteously.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate written documentation and records.
- Willingness and ability to work extended hours as necessary.
- Preference given to applicants with experience in road construction and road maintenance.
- Ability to work independently and follow direction while maintaining safety and productivity standards.
Certifications/Licensing Requirements
- Possess and maintain a valid Michigan Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), including all endorsements required by the Employer and applicable state and federal law.
- Subject to random Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) drug and alcohol testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations.

Essential Job Elements and Physical Requirements
The Seasonal/Part-time Road Maintenance Worker position is routinely in the field and will often encounter adverse conditions where strenuous effort is required, and the following physical requirements must be met.
Mobility: Able to walk extended distances and climb ladders or steps to access equipment and facilities.
Agility: Able to lift, push or pull objects weighing upwards of 80 pounds, and to operate equipment.
Vision: Able to read and comprehend instructions, directions and other documents. Hearing/Speech: Able to converse orally with telephone or radio, and to receive and communicate information to employees and the public.
Other: Able to tolerate, be exposed to and work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Ability to deal with people effectively and courteously
- Willingness to work extended hours, as necessary.
- May be subject to random MDOT drug/alcohol testing as required by state or federal law.
Pay Rate
Rate of pay $16.00 per hour ($18 per hour if temporary employee has CDL license).
